Federation Island’s construction to start very soon

Federation Island construction will start in the beginning of 2009 in Sochi, Russia. The project comes from the dutch Erick van Egeraart associated Architects (EEA). On the official website you can read:

It will be a 350-hectare artificial island located off the coast of Sochi, Russia. Federation Island will house 25,000 people in apartments and villas. Federation Island is expected to be completed in time for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The project will cost around 6.2 billion dollars (4.4 billion euros).

Federation Island will offer private residences, hotels, as well as cultural, leisure and recreational facilities. Federation Island will be built in the shape of the Russian Federation and it will reflect Russia’s major geographical features. The Russian river network will be used as a reference for the island’s waterways.

Federation Island will have seven main islands, more than a dozen private, and three breakwater islands. Sandy beaches, dunes, grasslands, bushes, small forests, and riverside will offer variety of accommodations: beach residences, luxury villas and apartments, dune, river and cliff houses.

Federation Island will be connected to the continent by two tunnels and one foot-bridge. It will have a length of 2.5 km and a width of 1.5 km, and a total 700,000 square meters of buildings will be built on it (10′000 residential buildings). The up to 70′000 happy citizens will have a total of 2 million square meters of recreational facilities to play around.

World Architecture News explains:

Federation Island comprises seven main, more than a dozen private and three breakwater islands. Sandy beaches, dunes, grasslands, bushes, small forests and riverside offer much variety for accommodation ranging from beach residences, luxury villas and apartments to dune, river and cliff houses. President Putin especially inquired about technical details and construction time. Erick van Egeraat assured that the Dutch experience in reclaiming land from the sea will benefit the project, which he considers to be unique among its kind.

Looks great! But do they really think Russia is Dubai? It’s freezing over there, who wants to go out on a boat and live on an Island? Dubai is also a whole city, and not just an Island. How can a lonely island survive? Sochi is lost in the middle of nowhere. Even if they do it for the olympics, why do you need an artificial island for the winter games? An artificial mountain would be more useful.
