The Moscow International Business Centre (MIBC or “Moscow City”) is an enormous multi-billion dollar project in the Presnenskaya Embankment area in the heart of Moscow’s Kremlin. The MIBC plan started in 1992 with the will to convert the old urban area of Presnenskaya, with its factories and industrial complexes, into a world class business complex. The project covers a square kilometer of land and incorporates all the elements for work and lifestyle.

It will be in what used to be a desert that we will see the largest fountain in the world. Of course, this $218 million project had to be in Dubai. Once again, Emaar Properties is responsible for the project. With its integral light and sound show, it is expected to become one of the city’s major tourist attractions (it should draw more than 10 million visitors per year!). The water will have 1'000 different expressions accompanied by music. 22'000 gallons of water will be pumped, and 6'600 lights and 50 color projectors will also be needed. The display will be 275 meters long, and the water will be shot 150 meters high.

The London 2012 Olympic stadium is a £450 million project. The athletics stadium will allow for 80'000 seats, and it will be converted into a more easily maintained 25'000 seat venue after the Games. The lighting and sound systems will be supported by a roof that will stretch around the Stadium. Of course, it will also provide cover and a base for special effects during the ceremonies. The Stadium will be built to international track and field standards for athletes. The Olympic Stadium will be located on an island at the south of the Olympic Park within easy walking distance of the Olympic Village and warm-up facilities.  The site will be surrounded on three sides by waterways.

It was some time ago, but professor T.Y. Lin’s design of the never-built bridge that spanned across the Strait of Gibraltar is still amazing. There are many engineers who have come up with their own structures for the construction of the Gibraltar Bridge. Professor T.Y. Lin thought of connecting the Point Oliveros with the Point Cires. With its 14km length, deep piers, and unprecedented 5'000 meter spans Lin’s proposed crossing is innovative but, considering an estimated cost of over $15 Billion and the lack of approval for this nearly 10 year old design, it is unlikely it will ever get built.

The Strata tower, a forty story, luxury residential building designed by Asymptote Architecture. It is currently being built at the incredible Al Raha Beach waterfront in Abu Dhabi and it should be completed by early 2011. It will be 160 meters high, making it the tallest building of the Al Dana precinct.  The Strata Tower has an "articulate, striking physical presence" that seeks to "encapsulate meaning through the use of abstract form drawn from both local cultural landscapes and motifs and dynamic forces of global influence".

The Al Raha Beach Development is another project in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates.  It will allow 120'000 people to leave in the 11-kilometre water front of Al Raha Beach, which is set to become one of the greatest waterfront cities in the world. The project is very large (500 hectares) and will therefore be part of a rail, bus, fast ferry and water taxi network of Abu Dhabi. Several Canals will allow the waterway transport. With this incredible project, Abu Dhabi seeks to becom a "great Arabian water city". It will include residential and commercial buildings, as well as shopping streets and recreationnal spaces.

Beijing’s new seven-level Olympic stadium is a $500 million project. Finishing touches are still being added to the stadium that will be able to seat as many as 91'000 spectators during the Olympic Games starting August 9, 2008. After the Games, temporary seating will be removed, reducing the the capacity to 80'000. This will also be the case of the London Olympic Stadium. The National Stadium, also known as the "Bird's Nest" for its lattice work of interwoven steel, has been designed by Herzog & de Meuron. It has made such an impact as to displace late Chinese leader Mao Zedong's face from commemorative Olympic bank notes.
