Yas Island: home of Abu Dhabi Formula 1 GP

Yas Island: home of Abu Dhabi Formula 1 GP

The $40 billion development project of Yas Island is under construction since 2007. It is located near Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The project comes from Aldar Properties, a real estate company from Abu Dhabi. It will include a retail development, luxurious hotels, a leisure complex and a motor racing circuit.

The racing circuit will be used from 2009 onwards for Abu Dhabi’s Formula One Grand Prix (F1 GP). It is the second place in the Gulf region where a F1 GP is hosted, Bahrain being the first one.

There will also be the first Ferrari theme park in the world, as well as a water park and golf courses. As in Dubai, Qatar and Bahrain, all hotels will be exceptional, and you will find marinas, polo clubs, apartments, villas and everything to make it an outstanding international tourist destination.

The Ferrari 250,000-square-metre theme park will be completed in 2009. There will be roller coasters, multi-media theatres and automobile displays.

Abu Dhabi will also be the home of a Warner Brothers theme park in Abu Dhabi, a satellite Louvre museu (at Saadiyat Island) and it has staged its first international film festival earlier this year. This is part of the country’s aim to be a world leader in arts, sports and entertainment. Even the Cirque du Soleil announced it would stage a permanent show on a huge artificial island off Dubai, and Universal Studios plans to build a theme park in the emirate at a cost of more than $2 billion.

It seems like the whole country is becoming a theme park. Well, if what they want is to become the world’s most touristic place, that’s certainly a way of doing it.
