World’s Longest Tunnel: 75% excavated

From more than 150 km of tunnels, galleries and passages that have to be excavated at the Gotthard Base Tunnel, Switzerland, 111.5 km had been excavated. This means more than 70% of the tunneling work is done.

Currently, both tunnels are also being concreted. “Of the total of 113.3 km of lining work, 71.3 km of the invert (63%) and 45.7 km of the vault (40%) have been concreted” (Alp Transit).

The Gotthard base tunnel flat rail tunnel for future travel through the Alps. It will be 57 km long, which will make it the world’s longest tunnel. It should become operational at the end of 2016.

The estimated cost of the project will be 11.83 billion Swiss francs (approx. same in dollars).
