Dubai - The fastest growing city in the world

Dubai became in 1971 one of the 7 emirates of the UAE (United Arab Emirates). The country has a surface of 3′885 km² (1.5 times the surface of Luxembourg), but 75% of the territory is covered by the desert.
Dubai is governed since January 4, 2006, by Emir Mohammed ben Rached al Maktoum. The population increased from 265′702 in 1980, to 669′181 in 1995 and to 1,321,453 in 2006. In 2003, 84% of the population was immigrated and 71% were men.

In 1990, Dubai’s government became aware that they depended entirely of fossil energies (petrol) and decided to start reconversion in favor of new technologies, commerce and luxury related business. In 15 years, the contribution of petrol in the GNP (Gross National Product) dropped from 80% to 10%.

So, do you recognize those three buildings? Some People see Dubai as a “large scale SimCity”. I guess now you know why…
After 10 years of unrestrained constructions, 15% of all building constructions in the world are done in Dubai. One will find there from 15 to 25% of the cranes of the world… 70 billion € are currently invested in building projects…

At the beginning of August 2004, 5.200 buildings were under construction (offices, shopping centres, hotels or residential buildings). The buildings progress at the speed of 2 floors per week. The number of tourists was evaluated to 1.6 million in 1995, 3.6 million in 2001, 6 million in 2005 and 15 million are expected for 2010. In 2005, it was composed of 34% of Arabs, 32% of Europeans, 23% of Asians, 5% Africans, and 4% of Americans. For the first 9 months of 2005, the city held the best world rate of hotel occupation with 86% (New York had 83% and Singapore 80%). The Shopping Festival, from January 15 to February 15, accommodates more than 3 million visitors. It is almost impossible for a foreigner to obtain the nationality or to settle there definitively. In 2002, in order to promote the real estate, a law was promulgated making it possible for foreigners to own buildings (but not the ground) for some 99 year old beams. Here are some achievements and projects:
- Skidome Dubai
It cost 200 € million, and it is the largest ski dome in the world. Don’t forget it’s 40°C outside… Inside, it is -1°C. It is 80m high, 80m wide and has a length of 400m. It can have 1′500 persons inside.

- Dubai Marina
The Palm Islands (project in progress). The auto-claimed “8th wonder of the world” The 3 Palms Islands of Jumeirah, Jebel Ali and Deira should create an estimated additional 500 km of coasts (+166%). 100 luxurious hotels, 5′000 apartments and 10′000 villas

This is the Palm Jumeirah island estimated at 1,2 billion €. This artificial island which has the shape of a palm tree is the first of the Palm Islands. It is actually in final phase and it will shelter more than 2′500 apartments, 1′400 villas, 32 five-star hotels and 200 luxury shops.

This is a promotional video for The Palm.
- The World
The World is an archipelago of artificial islands, shaped like the continents of the Earth, being constructed off the coast of Dubai. The project is inspired by the Palm Islands. It will consist of 250 to 300 smaller private artificial islands divided into four categories - private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. The entire project is slated for completion in 2008.

Each island will range from 250′000 to 900′000 square feet (5.74 to 20.66 acres; 23 226m² to 83′613m²) in size, with 50 to 100 metres of water between each island. The development will cover an area of 9 kilometers in length and 6 kilometers in width, surrounded by an oval breakwater. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by boat and helicopter. Each island will cost an estimated average of $25 million. It is owned and is being constructed by Al Nakheel Properties (Nakheel Corp). The World is also known as the Globe Islands.
- Burj Al Arab Hotel
Burj Al Arab Hotel (*******) cost 70 € million and is 321 meters high. Located on an artificial island, is at the same time the highest hotel of the world and the only one having 7 stars (not the traditional classification).

- Hydropolis
Hydropolis (self-acclaimed 10-star) will cost $500 million. It is an underwater hotel that should be immersed near Dubai at the end of the year. It’s construction has been relaunched, after some “cost issues and concerns over the project’s impact on marine life” (Wikipedia.) in February 2007. There will be 220 suites with panoramic windows.

Burj Dubai Tower
This skyscraper should be finished in 2008. It will be the highest building in the world. The cost is estimated at €80 million. Burj Dubai Tower should be around 800m high (authorities want the hight to remain secret) and have 167 floors. It is in the center of a new district called “Downtown Burj”, which will cost around €15 billion.
For updates on the construiction of the tower, I recommend you to visit burjdubaiskyscraper.com.

This Dubai site is really marvellous; I didn’t know they were building so many new ‘complexes’; really astonishing, knowing it is mostly desert-land. Don’t they have these huge desalting plants in Dubai to have good drinking water? I will have a look at all the others sites later!

Nice website…I’ve seen the first pictures before (growth of Dubai). In the ones I saw, the first picture was from 1920 instead of 1990. Can you varify the date on yours?
Thanks, N.
August 25th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Well, I have been looking on the internet, and it seems this famous picture has been taken in 1990, and not in 1920. The “craziness” started just after 1990.

When you choose to invest in a home at The Tiger Woods Dubai, you become part of a very special community. Ownership is exclusive, and with two distinct types of residential options available, you’ll find the home that suits your lifestyle perfectly, the home where you belong. Our Custom Residences provide you with the opportunity to design a grand estate home to your own precise specifications. Think of this as a blank canvas, an invitation for you to give expression to your ideas and create a masterpiece. Of course, master planning guidelines are in place to ensure the whole community maintains the same high standards throughout. The Signature Residences, on the other hand, are ready-built properties, designed by an international team of renowned architects, landscape and interior designers. Each home is one of a kind. Whichever property you choose, it will stand as a clear reflection of your personal taste and quickly become the place you’ll love to live.
Even before entering the Hotel at The Tiger Woods Dubai, your senses promise you that the experience will be something quite special. From the outside, this exquisite boutique hotel is richly detailed in traditional Arabian style. From private courtyards and balconies you can enjoy incredible views of the carefully-tended gardens, trickling streams and waterfalls. And of course, the lush green fairways of Al Ruwaya are always within sight to tempt you.
Playing Al Ruwaya, meaning “serenity,” is an experience reserved for those seeking a respite from the city in a beautifully landscaped, impeccably designed environment’
I recommend that the author of this website insert some pictures of this fine golf course and talk about the golf in Dubai.
Thanks,
Tiger

I dont know if that was actually tiger woods but i agree with what he was saying and that the maker of this site should include golf in dubai.

April 21st, 2008 at 10:43 am
no comment(shocked). How a human can do this!!!
April 21st, 2008 at 7:02 pm
I don’t anyone who has made a comment on how amazing Dubai is has ever studied the lives of those who actually built these buildings. They are poor migrants being shipped to dubai to work 10-14 hours a day in the heat. Imagine being on top of one of those buildings working in the desert. The sun is literally ON YOUR FACE. 900 deaths were reported from heat stroke in 2005 and they are forced to live in walled-up slums because they are all paid a dollar an hour. This city is built on slave labor and is expanding much too fast than it can keep up with. in 2001, Dubai nearly went under because tourism came to a stand still due to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centers. Think about what kind of carnage the city would experience if tourism and rich elites were to have a good reason to stop touring Dubai. And the fact that these migrant laborers are now allowed to unionize could spell disaster if they decide to mobilize. There would be billions of dollars in damage and they would win considering they make up 80% OF THE POPULATION. I don’t mean to be a stick in the mud but this is reality and this is the reality of where this massive expansion is headed due to great oppression.
April 29th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Oh Amanda, give me a brake- I have seen your similar posts and threads denouncing Dubai all over the internet. Are you anti-Dubai lobbyist? Nobodyy has forced Asian migrants to come to Dubai and earn a living. Without Dubai’s wages they would starve to death in Iraq, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Philippines where unemployment is so high that every second person does not have a regular job. And your, American government with Bushes is clearly one of the culprits for the dreadful state of these countries indebting and bombarding those countries and destroying their economies….
April 30th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
okay, look. I’m an anthropologist who studies unstable economies and this one is one of the worst. They are literally paid a dollar an hour when the country is making billions of dollars A DAY and spending it on tourism. Numerous laws are accommodating to foreigners and the migrants have no rights. Ramadan was completely ignored. I’m very aware they are impoverished in their home countries, but their governments actually ask them to go core countries like Dubai to send money home. It’s one of the modern conditions of globalism- deterritorialization. They HAVE NO CHOICE but to go to places like Dubai and send back the little bit of income they make there. You can’t imagine the isolation and oppression they experience in places like Dubai. And trust me, I’m more than aware of the corruption American tourists have proliferated. I hate tourism because it is modern colonialism. You really have no idea of their conditions. I’m a human rights lobbyist. what is going on in Dubai is against human rights for about 80% of the population. Maybe you should present some facts in your argument.

DEBEMOS APRENDER A RESPETAR LA NATURALEZA Y NO ALTERAR LOS ECOSISTEMAS, SABEN A DONDE VAN A IR A DAR LAS AGUAS RESIDUALES DE TODAS LAS HERMOSAS CASAS QUE AHI SE HAN CONSTRUIDO EN LA ISLA PALMERA Y TODAS LAS DEMAS .
Y SIN CONTAR LOS GRANDES Y MAGNIFICOS HOTELES SIN IGUAL EN SU ARQUITECTURA.
SABEN CUANTA AGUA SE NECESITA PARA CUBRIR LAS NECESIDADES DE TODAS LAS PERSONAS QUE SE ALOJARAN EN ELLOS. ADEMAS DE LAS MULTIPLES PICINAS.
SE QUE TIENEN PERTROLEO , PERO Y EL AGUA ??? DE DONDE LA SACAN Y CUANTO TIEMPO DURARA……….ADEMAS DE ESTO, LAS CANTIDADES DE BASURA QUE SE GENERARAN DIARIAMENTE DONDE VAN A PARAR???
LO HAN PENSADO , TODO ES MARVILLOSO Y RELUCIENTE…. PERO RECUERDEN QUE NO TODO LO QUE BRILLA ES ORO.
TODO TIENE UN PRECIO, Y TAL VEZ AHORA SEA EL SUEÑO HECHO REALIDAD DE LOS ARABES. PERO A ELLOS SE LES VA A ACABAR EL PETROLEO Y NOSOTROS LOS TURISTAS LES ESTAMOS PAGANDO POR ADELANTADO Y DESDE LEJOS QUE SE HAGAN MAS RICOS A COSTA DE LOS ELEVADOS PRECIOS DE LA GASOLINA Y LAS LINDAS VACACIONES QUE HACE UNO A DEJAR UN DINERO QUE TAL VEZ NI SE TENGA, PERO QUE LE PRESTARA ALGUN BANCO QUE DE SEGURO ES UN ARABE Y DUEÑO TAMBIEN DEL HOTEL DONDE USTED SE HOSPEDO EN DUBAI….JAJAJAJA QUE IRONIA ES UN CIRCULO VICIOSO.
BUSH ES MUY AMIGO DE LOS ARABES Y CUANDO EL SE PRESENTA EN ESE MARAVILLOSSO LUGAR TODO SE PARALIZA PARA QUE EL SEÑOR NO CORRA PELIGRO….NO LO PUEDO CREER LOS ARABES SON TONTOS O SE HACEN….
EL TAMBIEN ESTARA HACIENDO SU ALCANCIA>>>>???? O PARA QUE VA.
PERSONALMENTE A MI ME PARECE UN LUGAR MUY MODERNO Y LINDO, PERO VIVAMOS LA REALIDA Y DISFRUTEMOS LO QUE TENEMOS NO CORRAN CUANDO APENAS PUEDEN CAMINAR.
SE QUE EN EL MUNDO HAY MUCHISIMOS LUGARES CON LO MISMOS ADELANTOS EN MODERNIDAD Y LINDAS ISLAS PARA VISITAR QUE SON MAS BARATOS Y QUE SI CUIDAN LA ECOLOGIA Y SU NATURALEZA, SOLO QUE TIENEN QUE BUSCAR NO SE DEJEN INPRESIONAR .

First of all, how any americans would want to go there is not up to me, but take a minute to think why our gass prices are skyrocketing…It’s because those a**holes are spending trillions of dollars put together on all these stupid, no use projects. And yes Amanda Johnson you are totally with all that you said. I almost feel sorry for all those poor workers that are working thousands of feet in the air for the irrelevant projects……. SCREW DUBAI!!!!
AND OH YEAH, SCREW THERE GOVERNMENT FOR SPENDING ALL THAT MONEY ON TOTAL BULL**** YES IT’S NICE, BUT REALLY…WHY???????
May 10th, 2008 at 4:34 am
dubai is so awsome looking!!
what a shame that we are the ones paying for it…..
May 14th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
Umm Screw Dubai you have absolutely no idea how Dubai earns money, if you would do just a small amount of research you would see that Dubai gets less than 10% of their GNP from oil so before you start rambling rubbish maybe you should stop driving those 1 ton SUV’s which also have no purpose but to show off. America is the most materialistic society ever and dubai is raking billions of it in, so there is something wrong with you not with Dubai.
May 16th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
yes, Dubai only gets about 10% of revenue from oil profits, but their neighbor- Abu Dhabi, is the one drilling out the oil for the United Arab Emarites (they are the ones producing most of the Arab world’s oil). That 10% is from what Abu Dhabi “loans” to Dubai and then the rest of Dubai’s economy runs on an unstable base of tourism. My point is not one trying to argue that America is any less corrupt or one the screws us over in gas prices. Every government is corrupt in some way. I’m merely trying to say that Dubai is developing too fast for its own good. It’s creating oppression and segregation because most of the workers are from the poorest Asian islands and are discriminated against. Dubai is seen as the city of the future, but it’s a very surface-oriented connotation. Underneith the glamour are the sewage infested slums, frivolous governent spending, and disillusionment from the richest 15% percent of the population saying things like, “Thank god we don’t have poverty.” That’s an actual quote from a grand daughter of one of Sheikh Muktaum’s officials.
My point is simply: there is enough money and food to go around, but their is a major disribution problem. Too much for some, nothing for others. No matter where you are on Earth, you will see that so stop trying to argue the America sucks or Dubai sucks or where ever… That’s not the point.
May 20th, 2008 at 2:46 am
yeah i did a little research and your right but i still agree with amanda johnson

Great video! This city is going to be amazing. Truely is exciting to see such creativity put into planning a city.
June 30th, 2008 at 5:23 am
I personally do not care what other say about Dubai or any other country in the region….The local governements do not make up what the average person of those countries are truly like. They can not fairly represent the average person without stepping on the toes of so many.
To be frank…I would love the opportunity not just to travel to/ through the entire region but also to have the opportunity to work there with the line of work I am in as it would be rewarding not only for them but for myself as I would have that opportunity to experience different cultures.

Sorry but everything shown are all artist impressions future views. Why are the only photos of the buildings on Sheik Zayyed road shown from the air? How about some ground level shots. I have been to Dubai and it is 100 years behind Hong Kong, Beijing, New York,, Tokyo, Singapore, L.A. These cities are light years beyond anything the USA has to offer.

Where I found complete and long video about Dubai and its constructions?
October 13th, 2008 at 7:55 am
While it looks nice - I have to say that as an American, I don’t think I’d be very safe there. Sure they want my tourist money, but they also want to kill us because we’re simply americans.
October 13th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
I think you’re completely wrong about Dubai. It’s a very civilized city. You don’t think all arabs are terrorists, and they don’t think all americans are evil.
Well, maybe you do think this… Then you are stupid.
People from Dubai live and work with americans, and they both need each other. There is no hate between then over there.
