Akashi Kaikyo 1The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the world. It measures 3′911 m (12,831 ft), but it’s it’s central span that beats all records with a lengh of 1,991 metres (6,532 ft). It has 6 lanes of roadway and a clearance below of 65 meters, letting huge ships navigate through the Akashi Strait, who required a 1′500 metres (4,921 ft) wide shipping lane for being an international waterway.

Facts

The bridge survived without a scratch the Kobe earthquake on January 17, 1995. Well, nearly without a scratch: the construction was not finished yet, and the span who originally had to be 1′990 metres (6,529 ft) long had to be enlarged of another metre. Fortunarely, this bridge was built to stand whatever happens: it can handle an earthquakes measuring up to 8.5 on the Richter Scale.
